French President Francois Hollande has condemned a recent deadly airstrike on a UN shelter in the Gaza Strip as “unacceptable.”
Israeli forces on Sunday hit a UN-run school sheltering Palestinian refugees in the southern city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip, killing at least 11 people and injuring some 30 others.
Hollande issued a statement to the French news agency AFP later on Sunday, condemning the attack but not mentioning who he holds responsible for the attack.
The French president said he backs calls by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon “to ask those responsible for this violation of international law answer for their actions.”
Ban had made the call in a statement earlier on Sunday, in which he condemned the attack as a “moral outrage and a criminal act.”
The United States also condemned the Israeli airstrike, saying Washington is “appalled” by the “disgraceful” Israeli attack.
The Sunday airstrike was the third time in ten days that a UN-run school had been targeted in the Gaza Strip.
Israel has been targeting the Gaza Strip with military attacks since July 8. The air, sea and land strikes by Israel have so far killed at least 1,830 people and injured over 9,300 others, according to Palestinian sources. Nearly 400 children are among the fatalities.
