(AhlulBayt News Agency) - UN special envoy for Syria on Monday conferred on political initiations for the resolution of crisis in the war-torn region with the Iranian foreign minister.

Iran's Zarif, UN envoy discuss Syria in Tehran

Staffan de Mistura and Mohammad Javad Zarif, in their meeting, discussed the latest political and battlefield developments in Syria and the initiations for resolution of crisis through dialogue.

Prior to his meeting with Iranian foreign minister, the UN envoy met with the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari.

During their talks, the two officials examined Syria developments, including defeats suffered by ISIS Takfiri terrorist group, implementation of peace agreement and establishment of truce in the war-torn country.

Staffan de Mistura arrived in the Iranian capital on Sunday evening.

De Mistura's visit to Tehran is taking place on the eve of the sixth round of Astana talks on Syria to be held in the upcoming days in the capital of Kazakhstan.

Since March 2011, Syria has been suffering from unrest and terrorist acts.

Iran, Russia and Turkey are the initiators of the December 30, 2016 ceasefire in Syria.

The three countries have so far held five rounds of Astana talks.
