Senior Syrian cleric warns against dangerous developments threatening Hazrat Zeynab holy shrine

Sheikh Adham Al-Khatib, the Friday prayer leader at the shrine of Hazrat Zeynab (AS), warned of dangerous developments threatening this pilgrimage site, as well as incitement and unrest at this sacred place.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Sheikh Adham Al-Khatib, the Friday prayer leader at the shrine of Hazrat Zeynab (AS), warned of dangerous developments threatening this pilgrimage site, as well as incitement and unrest at this sacred place.

Sheikh Khatib, who is the vice president of the Association of Scholars Following the School of Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS) in Syria, emphasized in a statement that he will not enter the sacred shrine of Hazrat Zeynab (AS) until the new Syrian government fully assumes responsibility for securing the mausoleum, guarantees the necessary protection for pilgrims and staff, and prohibits any desecration of this site.

He noted that the staff and officials responsible for defending the shrine of laid down their weapons after the change of the Syrian government.

“It was agreed that, through cooperation, they would support and maintain the security of this important religious site.”

The current situation of the shrine has warning signs of a major conflict that could have dangerous consequences, and the responsible groups must act immediately to resolve this crisis before it escalates, he said.

Recently, the holy shrine of Hazrat Zeynab (SA) in the suburbs of Damascus was closed due to repeated attacks by unidentified individuals.

Performing prayers at this pilgrimage site has also been suspended to prevent Fitna (sedition) caused by certain individuals.

It is reported that recently, unidentified individuals attempted to create unrest and insecurity at the holy mausoleum.

With the rise of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) elements in Syria, the shrine of Hazrat Zeynab (SA) has faced challenges.

On January 11, the intelligence service of the new Syrian government announced that it had successfully foiled a Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) attempt to plant a bomb in the shrine.

The HTS had earlier removed over 90 military personnel from its multinational brigades from around the shrine in the suburbs of Damascus due to misconduct and an increase in complaints against them.

Despite the extremist approach of the HTS and its history in this regard, after coming to power in Syria, it reportedly handles religious shrines, especially sacred Shia sites, with great caution to avoid any desecration or transgression that might provoke public outrage.
